A little about India, the food, the people, and the culture.
The Food
Sol Kadhi
(Kokum kadhi)
Sol Kadhi is a mildly spiced drink made from kokum (mangosteen) and coconut milk and is the most commonly found beverage in the Konkan belt. Owing to its digestive properties, Sol Kadhi is usually had at the end of a meal. It can be spiced using cumin seeds, coriander, and even garlic. Simply put, it is the South Indian equivalent of the popularly known Chaach that is consumed in North India.
The People
Khasi people, Meghalaya
Khasi were the earliest immigrant tribes who came from Myanmar and settled down in the plains of eastern Assam. Later they had their own kingdom until the British exercised control over them. The word Khasi is derived from Shankradeva's 'Baghavata Purana', an Indo-Aryan literature.
Khasi tribes reside in different parts of India like the state of Assam, the Khasi Jaintia hills in Meghalaya, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, West Bengal, and Jammu & Kashmir. They are called by different names such as Khasi Pahris, Khuchia, Kassi, Khashi, and Khasa. A large part of the Khasi population is found in the state of Meghalaya.
The main difference of Khasis which sets Apart from other tribes is that in Khasis the descendants are recognized from Mother and not from Father (Matrilineal Society). This is the unique feature of the Khasi Tribe. According to Khasi Law and tradition, the mother inherits the children and property but not the father. According to Khasi Laws, Marriage is purely a Civil Contract. Male's marriageable age group is from 18-35 while women's is 13-18. Arranged marriages do occur but not in a preferred form. Young men and women are given the freedom to choose their mates. According to Law, a woman cannot be forced into marriage; she owns the children and properties. A woman may end the marriage at her will with no objection from her husband. The youngest daughter is the custodian of the family property.
The Culture
Eating with Hands
It is believed in Ayurveda that each finger is an extension of the five elements - air, water, space, fire, and earth. Eating food with fingers stimulates these five elements and helps in the secretion of digestive juices in the stomach. Also, feeling your food makes you more conscious of its taste, textures, and aromas. This is one of the most common Indian eating habits, and rightfully so. The benefits of eating with hands are many, and elders in most families still swear by this tradition. Of course, your hands need to be sparkling clean before you start eating.
